Addisababa, Ethiopia The African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) has unequivocally expressed its support for the preservation of unity, territorial integrity, independence, and sovereignty of Somalia amidst the growing tensions with Ethiopia. Following a crucial meeting held to discuss the escalating situation, the Council has released a comprehensive statement outlining its position and recommendations for the involved nations.
Ambassadors Abdullahi Warfa from Somalia and Ayele Lire from Ethiopia presented detailed reports to the Council, shedding light on the intricate dynamics of the dispute. The Council noted with concern the recent developments, particularly the agreement signed between Ethiopia and the northern Somali region of Somaliland, which has been a point of contention.
The AUPSC has taken a considerate approach in assessing the potential regional impact of this situation. The Council welcomed the January 3, 2024 statement from Moussa Faki Mahamat, the Chairman of the African Union Commission, which highlighted the significance of unity and cooperative governance in Africa.
In a decisive move, the Council has reiterated its complete support for the principles of unity, territorial integrity, independence, and sovereignty for all its member states, including Ethiopia and Somalia. The Council emphasized the importance of both nations adhering to and reflecting the principles of the African Union and international standards in their bilateral and international relations.
In a call for broader respect for sovereignty, the Council urged other countries to adhere to the principles of non-interference in the internal affairs of these African Union member states. The Council stressed the need for Ethiopia and Somalia to exhibit patience and refrain from actions and statements that could further exacerbate the situation.
In a significant step towards facilitating dialogue, the AUPSC has requested the Chairman of the African Union Commission to appoint former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo as a mediator. His role will be to initiate and oversee talks between the two sides and to keep the Council regularly informed of the progress.
This development marks a crucial phase in the African Union’s efforts to foster peace and stability in the region. The Council’s call for adherence to unity and sovereignty principles underscores the importance of cooperative and respectful inter-state relations in Africa.
The African Union’s proactive involvement is seen as a vital step towards resolving the tensions and ensuring a peaceful and collaborative future for the continent.
