The Somali Diaspora’s Petition Against PM Abiy Ahmed’s Nobel Prize

Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed poses for the media after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway, on Dec. 10, 2019. In a recent development that underscores the volatile nature of international peace efforts, the Somali Diaspora Movement has launched a campaign to rescind Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s 2019 Nobel Peace Prize. The initiative, echoing a similar effort by a coalition named Concerned Ethiopians, is rooted in dismay over Ahmed’s actions since receiving the accolade, particularly his government’s involvement in the Tigray conflict and alleged human rights abuses.

The Nobel Peace Prize, bestowed upon Ahmed for his role in ending the border dispute with Eritrea and initiating peace talks in the region, is now at the center of a contentious debate. Critics argue that Ahmed’s subsequent conduct, including his involvement in the Ethiopia-Somaliland port deal and the ongoing Tigray conflict, contradicts the ethos of the Nobel Prize and warrants a reassessment of his award.
